How our sense of tonality works, without thinking about keys, chords, scales, intervals etc.

playpianofluently.com/ Tonality works according to some basic, solid principles that we can easily learn. But we must also use strong expressive intention which is based more on rhythm and cadence than theoretical ideas like keys, chords, intervals, scales etc. We also don't need aural training, or to develop our sense of pitch, as our inner sense of harmony and harmonic progression is instinct...

How to play flowing piano passages smoothly and rhythmically

This trick can free us from common misconceptions about swing
Переглядів 4558 місяців тому
philbestmusic.com/ Swing can add a special kind of unforced expressive rhythmic quality which is more colloquial, informal, lyrical and intelligible, but when modern jazz pianists do swing, the effect can sound strict and driven rather than flowing and natural. New to your channel and new to learning to play an instrument. I am 62 and want so bad to learn piano and drums, also interested in bass guitar. Could you explain the use of the computer set up on the back of your piano. I will have to teach myself to do all these things so I can do it at my pace. Any help would be appreciated. I have purchased a nice Kohler and Campbell console piano and I also have quality-built guitars and drums. I am currently learning to tune the piano myself. Thanks, Phil, for all your help, and Greetings from South Carolina.

There are lots of different setups. One basic setup would be this... You need a digital piano connected to the computer via usb and an audio interface connected to another usb port on the computer. Then, you need speakers connected to the audio outs of the audio interface. There are loads of videos on UA-cam that show you how to make things work with different setups. Have fun!

I have a question on auxiliary notes How do we add auxiliary notes when we change harmonic blocks If I play a C block and tag it as a home, it is clear that D, F, A, B, are the auxiliary notes But If I change harmonic block let's say G block as my away block from C home block Which one are the auxiliary notes? A, C, E, F, (no sharps or flats) or A, C, E, F# (one sharp)

    • @PhilBestMusic

Either! It depends on the diatonic block you're currently in. Also, we can have chromatic auxiliary notes too, which can sound very fruity.

Wonderful music and demo, Phil! Can you say something about your setup? Are you using any sound processing other than Pianoteq, like, EQs, reverbs, postprocessing etc.? When I play Pianoteq myself (with no other sound post-processing) it always sounds a bit dry and artificial. So I am wondering if you use some post processing for this recording. Thanks!

Thank you! In this instance, I'm just using the Bösendorfer warm preset with very light post-processing using Waves L3-LL. I generally find Pianoteq's pianos sound slightly thick or woolly, so I put them through Waves C6, Piano B preset. I tend to use presets whenever I can, with only slight tweaks to avoid the sound engineering workload and have more time for making music.

I've just tried the demo of Bosendorfer, a piano that brings out the best of Oscar Peterson, and after twelve years, there's still something, an underlying woolliness and artificial tonality of Modartt I just haven't found a way to surpass. My setup is fine, with a Roland FP-7F, DragonFly DAC and AKG Ref Headphones, but nothing has shifted an overall disappointment. I've tried every trick suggested in the Forums, but I just don't know what it is. These issues don't arise with Garritan CFX, but I would have loved to hear the Bosendorfer as it should be on Modartt.

I don't have that impression myself, but of course, our likes and dislikes are very subjective. I prefer Pianoteq to my Roland Fantom piano sounds but some people have the opposite preference. Personally I dislike sampled instruments as they don't respond to my expressive input like modelled or real pianos do. Each to their own!

    • @systemai

@@PhilBestMusic that's the thing; it's not an issue about subjectivity of the piano timbre or comparing algorithms vs samples, but rather setup; something in the post-processing of PianoTeq that I and many others have had issues with over the years. The feedback of PianoTeq pianos is superb, it's just tonality. I really want to know what the problem is. I'm just sounding off in disappointment :-)

When I first heard Pianoteq, I was amazed by the fact it did not use samples. Then I heard some samples libraries out there and I thought their sound was just incomparably better. Well, here I am now amazed by this Bösendorfer model that they made! If it sounds like this out of the box when I test this, I am definitely going to consider this for my new piano library. I use Linux, and there aren't many sample libraries which run in here, because they are made for Windows. Pianoteq has a native application for Linux. This is an exciting day indeed.

@@PhilBestMusic Okay! :) I'm currently using words "Tahdon laulaa kauniin laulun". It translates into English as "I want to sing a beautiful song". I reckoned that the Finnish word "rytmi" for rhythm didn't flow as well. I also thought that the mantra could perhaps be used for general purpose music teaching 🤔

    • @PhilBestMusic
      @PhilBestMusic 5 днів тому

That's fine for common time. But if you look ahead in the 15 steps or in the Concise Model, you'll see that my mantras work as a whole system which is definitely better for long term learning. So I recommend using what's there, provided that the language barrier isn't too big - yours would not be, I assume and Scandinavia generally seems to have an impressive amount of very good English-speakers. Also, the meaning of my words - inward and flowing rhythm - is designed to impart a subliminal message! As for teaching it, think of it like learning a rhyme in a foreign language (as a child, I remember learning a rhyme or two in French). When we chant, the vowels need to be long (Italian-like). In British English we have many staccato vowels which when we sing or chant are lengthened. I don't mean to appear dogmatic but it's a neat system that works!

beautiful original piece! very modern and a nice balance between your knowledge of and experience in both classical and improvisational areas. your technical ability and harmonic understanding, not to mention improvisational prowess, go well beyond the likes of keith emerson, tony banks, rick wakeman and kerry minnear, often considered the best of the prog rock greats. i more or less stopped listening to prog in the late 1970s as the greats like Genesis, Yes and Gentle Giant could no longer top or even meet the incredibly high standards they themselves set. plus a new metallic trend that put technical "virtuosity" above artistry emerged and eventually came to dominate the genre. maybe it's time for a return to the original canterbury roots -- music full of subtlety but powerful in dynamics as well. and full of the crazed creative mirth that only the brits (i'm canadian) seem to be capable of. there's a whole generation of baby boomers who have always put musical authenticity above all else who would love to see it. don't forget, prog, like jazz a generation earlier, was the dominant popular musical form worldwide between about 1965 (late beatles, moodies, pink floyd, king crimson) to about 1975 when, regrettably, disco, then punk, gave prog a one-two that, IMHO, it has never recovered from. certainly not all prog fans were musical purists, though a substantial number of were and are. i know, several friends and i are living proof. and you seem like someone with the ability to achieve that. perhaps my best advice: be true to yourself and your art. in any case, i'm anxious to see your new direction unfold. best of luck

What patch did you use on the Fantom, factory, custom? Was it the V-piano? I have a V-piano in the RD-2000 but it has a problem, the C above middle C (MIDI note C5) will not sustain properly at C5 and a few notes above and below it. Whether holding down the key for sustain, or using pedal it cuts out too early compared the rest of the octave. I have been tempted to buy the German Grand patch from Roland ($150) but I have already spent $2500 on a piano I cannot use. I spent 6 months attempting to fine tune this piano patch to sound as close to a Steinway Model D 9 foot grand classically tuned and voiced, no success yet. I tried layering piano samples (SuperNatural) over the V-Piano modeled tone, used all the tone controls and velocity curves to no avail. Whatever patch you played in this video did not sound to great either, maybe it sounds like you want it, or maybe it is factory? (Listening on near field studio monitors, JBL305p MKII, a very nuetral sound source) In comparison I also have a plain old Yamaha DGX-670 ($1000) that within one hour of owning it, fine tuned a patch that is just lovely (a good Steinway D patch) and the only digital piano I have owned in my life that I enjoy playing. Been playing piano for 56 years, finally a digital I can enjoy.
